I have always had a busy life, and as an introvert, I need to recharge often to keep up. Home has always been my safe space. My escape. My power source. However, if you don’t live alone, it can still be difficult to fuel up your depleted energy. But don’t despair! Here are 4 easy ways to create your own dream sanctuary inside your home. A space where you can go to relax, unplug and rejuvenate.
Stake out the Perfect Area

If you have an extra room, or a corner area in your living room, basement or even a little area in the backyard or on your deck, it could be the perfect spot for you to begin creating your calm space. In addition, it doesn’t have to be a large space, it could be a corner with a comfy chair, a window seat or a backyard deck with a cozy outdoor sofa and gas fire pit table. Scout out a place that is away from the main activity of the house, that gives you some semblance of privacy and tranquility.
Declutter

I am not the most organized person in the world, but I do not like messes. It causes me to feel overwhelmed and drained just looking at piles of mail, groceries sitting out on the counter because there is no room in the cabinets, or just “stuff” laying around that never get put away or used. I really don’t have the energy to constantly deal with clutter even though I contribute to some of it as well. With this said, my sanctuary is the one place in my home that I make sure I keep clear of clutter, creating a refreshing, calm area for myself.
Engage the Senses

In order to bring peace and soothing to your area, engaging all of your senses is imperative. Be sure to have soft lighting, candlelight or even a fireplace to give the space a warmth. Place a diffuser, wax warmers or insense in your space filled with scents like lavender, chamomile or sandalwood. A velvety pillow, a fluffy rug and fleece throw blanket can wrap you in warmth and soothing softness. Top it off with some calming meditative music or ambient sounds.
Digital Detox

In today’s world, it’s very difficult to unplug. We always feel we have to be on social media, keeping up with everyone and the latest news or trends. We watch videos, text, message, play games…even read books online. Being able to get off the tablets, laptops, and phones, however, is the best way to recharge. Read a real book. Journal. Draw or even do a jigsaw puzzle out of a box. Something that takes your mind, and eyes, off a screen and into a creative, slow paced activity. No stress, no ads, no talking. This will also help ready your body for sleep, which is always a positive if you do this before bed.
Your Sanctuary / Your Rules

There is no right or wrong way to create your space. It’s your area, and it should feel safe and cozy A place where you can be yourself, unwind, and renew your energy. You don’t have to spend a fortune on creating a space. Decorate with your favorite pictures, plants, and books. Choose a favorite chair, find one at a garage sale or even a bean bag will do.

Mine is my office. It has a comfy blue chair by the window, a beautiful blue/gray paint on the walls, with pink and gray accent decor. I have a shag gray rug on the floor, gray wood corner desk, and file cabinet, and small twin bed with a pretty pink comforter. A small book shelf with old vintage books, soft led string lights completes the space. When I need to recharge, I put on my fuzzy socks, fill my favorite mug with coffee, head back there and close the door. Perfection!
